Something From Nothing – Art of Rap Documentary

A release date has been set for Ice T’s new documentary “Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap” for June 15th. After premiering at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, the film was picked up by Indomina Group for worldwide release. Although I believe real Hip-Hop is truly underground, the culture has needed someone to step up and create something like this for years, and Ice T, now known to most as SVU actor and reality show tv star, has more than the means and connections to do it. Quoting Ice T, “I’ve got to give hip-hop something they didn’t even know they wanted.” I’m sure hardcore fans are going to question certain appearances and lack of appearances of artists, but apparently Ice T had to cut the 3-hour film down to 2-hours to submit to Sundance, and at the time shooting halted he had another 25 artists waiting to be filmed…damn. The film features interviews from OGs like Grandmaster Caz, Afrika Bambaataa, Chuck D, KRS-One, Lord Finesse, Big Daddy Kane, Kool Keith, Marley Marl, DJ Premier, Rakim, Mos Def, Nas, Redman, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Common, plus more. Either way this film is going to be interesting and definitely worth checking out.

Although collectively we have been posting music on this website for a few years now, we haven’t spent much time adding written content. I have decided to start using deckbros.com to blog. I (and Jdeck) will be posting about various things that spark our interests, along with the usual events and music projects. Hopefully these posts will give people a more personal view of us, since beyond local stuff and the few that have discovered us, Deck Bros. are still virtually unknown.

After traveling through Europe post college, I moved to Boston in 2007 totally broke without even a mattress to sleep on…I didn’t even have my own set of Technics at the time. After 4 years, a few jobs, and many apartments later, I have finally established myself, and I feel blessed for that. I never lost vision of my passion for DJing, and not once did I consider giving up the style and values of my craft to sell out and try to make an extra buck. I am in a constant battle trying to balance out my free time in order to be musically productive, and although I don’t play out as frequently as others DJs, doing music on the side allows me to create exactly what I want, without any commercial influence or pressure from the wackness. Stay tuned for more posts as I share things that inspire me: music, art, b-boying and life in general!

Flavor of The Month 1 Year Anniversary

We recently celebrated the 1 year anniversary of our monthly residency “Flavor of The Month” at the Enormous Room in Cambridge, MA. Unfortunately, we heard just days before the event that the venue would be closing after 10 years…so it turned out to be the last night of FOTM at The Enormous Room. We threw down a solid year of Classic Hip-Hop from the 90s-early 2000s, Reggae, Dancehall, Funk and Soul. Monthly visuals on the projector included movies such as Style Wars, Wild Style, Stations Of The Elevated, Just for Kicks, Infamy, Bruce Lee – Enter The Dragon, Ong Bak,Yeah Right! … just to name a few. I really enjoyed DJing at this event every month and thanks to everyone who came out and supported! Stay tuned for more.
